The story of illegal organ harvest and transplantation narrated by David Cronenberg sounds like the blueprint of a shocking body horror, and in many ways that is what Tales from the Organ Trade is, just not the type you are thinking of.

The supply of donated kidneys is not even close to adequate to the demand. People in need of kidney transplants wait for years on dialysis to reach the top of the transplant list, and 20% don’t make it to the top of that list. The human body can function with only one kidney and as with everything, where there is overwhelming demand and limited supply, there is a black market. In this market wealthy and desperate westerners pay tens of thousands of dollars for illegal operations, and the source of the kidneys? Some of the poorest people in the world, earning a fraction of that money to give up an organ with the hope of a better life.In this comprehensive documentary we meet the donors from Kosovo and the Philippines, victims of kidney failure from North America and a surgeon dubbed “Dr Frankenstein” by the world media.

Far from a simple vilification of an exploitative black market, the overwhelming message from the film is that the current system does not work. Whichever side of the debate you come down on, it is a debate that will flow long after the film ends. (Mark Moynihan)
